What to bring checklist...

Sonoma & Napa Wine Country Weather and Clothing Info for Bike Touring

The climate in the Sonoma & Napa Wine Country is wonderful for cycling most of the year.  Take a look at the seasons below to get an idea of what type of weather you might expect and some recommendations as to what to wear.

Summer- (Mid May-October) - In the summer months the chance of rain is almost non-existent and the hills gradually turn into a golden backdrop for the vineyards. Inland, the daytime highs are usually in the 80's and 90's but the nights and mornings tend to be cool as fog from the coast comes in.  On the coast it is cool and foggy most mornings and burns off in the afternoon.

Cycling Clothes for Summer Bike Touring

For casual riding we recommend wearing shorts, short sleeves and sun block. A lighter long sleeve top is also nice to keep you warm in the morning and you can remove it as the day warms up.

For road biking we suggest shorts, short sleeve jersey, wind vest, maybe arm & knee warmers for a cool morning on the coast and short finger gloves.

Spring and Fall (March, April, May and Oct) - On the shoulders of the dry summer and wet winter the spring and fall promise generally beautiful weather with a chance of an occasional storm coming through, though the frequency and duration are much less than in the winter months. The daytime temperatures are in the mid 60's and 70's with the evenings and early mornings quite cool in the low 40's. The spring is fresh and green and resplendent with wild flowers.  In the fall the vineyards become a sea of brilliant color.  The coastal areas tend to more windy in the spring and warmer and beautiful in the fall.

Cycling Clothes for Spring and Fall Riding in the Wine Country

For casual riding we recommend wearing layers such as tights, sweats or other long pants over shorts and a long sleeve jersey or a windbreaker over a lighter top.  This will allow you to be warm in the morning and comfortable as the day warms up.

For road biking we suggest shorts, knee or leg warmers, short sleeve base layer, short sleeve jersey, wind vest, arm warmers,  short or long finger gloves. If you're planning on riding rain or shine also bring winter gear.

Winter- (December- March) - Winter is the rainy season in Northern California.  There is plenty of rain and stormy weather and it is also notoriously unpredictable.  You could experience a week of solid cold rain or days of beautiful sunshine and temps in the 60's and 70's.  Even when it does rain it is usually not very cold and many locals ride year round.  If you are planning a trip in the winter we recommend being prepared for all types of weather.  Bring tights or long pants, a long sleeve jersey or warm top (non-cotton) and rain gear.

Cycling Clothes for Winter Riding in the Wine Country

For casual riding we recommend wearing layers such as exercise pants over comfortable riding shorts and a long sleeve jersey and/or a windbreaker over a lighter top.  This will allow you to be warm in the morning and comfortable as the day warms up.  If you're planning on riding rain or shine also bring rain pants & jacket, long finger gloves, warm socks and clear/yellow lens glasses.

For road biking we suggest shorts, knee or leg warmers, short or long sleeve base layer, short sleeve jersey, wind vest, arm warmers and gloves. If you're planning on riding rain or shine also bring rain jacket and rain pants (if you use them), warm socks, neoprene or waterproof sock/shoe covers, long finger gloves, under helmet cap, clear/yellow lens glasses.
